Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The championship title of the 1st Annual Dan Greene Memorial Invitational went to John Carroll University Sunday afternoon. John Carroll posted a 100-88 victory in handing the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team their first loss of the 2015-16 campaign.
In the consolation match, Bridgewater (Va.) College (1-1) edged Transylvania University (0-2), 55-50, for third place.
John Carroll's senior guard Will Stark (Twinsburg, Ohio/Gates Mills Hawken) was named the tournament MVP while Bridgewater's junior Cameron Thurston (College Park, Md./Parkdale), JCU's junior guard David Linane (Euclid, Ohio/Gates Mills Gilmour Academy), St. Mary's senior captain Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School), and Transylvania's first-year forward Bo Schuh (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Covington Catholic) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Both sides displayed high-scoring offenses as the game featured 27 three-pointers made with John Carroll connecting on 16 triples and St. Mary's firing off 11. The Seahawks shot nearly 53-percent from the field for the game while JCU made nearly 62-percent of its long-range shots.
Brooks poured in a game- and season-best 34 points as he shot 12-of-22 from the field, including making eight three-pointers, while adding six rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Sophomore forward Isaiah Martin (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park) contributed 16 points and a game-best nine rebounds while senior guard Donya Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) chipped in 10 points and four boards.
The first half featured five lead changes and four tied scores. St. Mary's opened up with a 5-0 run behind a dunk by Martin and a Jackson three-pointer before the Blue Streak scored eight straight to ignite a 15-2 run. St. Mary's turned around an eight-point deficit with an 11-0 run to regain the lead at 18-15 on a three-pointer by Brooks. The Seahawks' momentum carried them to their biggest advantage of the game, 29-22, at 9:14 as Brooks' third triple of the game capped a 22-7 run.
John Carroll (2-0) responded with a 19-7 run to stake a 41-36 lead with 4:56 left in the half. However, the Seahawks closed out the half by outscoring JCU, 14-9, to send both teams into the locker room equal at halftime with 50 points each.
Sophomore Tony Vuyanich (Euclid, Ohio/Lakewood St. Clair) led all scorers at intermission with 17 points off the bench as Vuyanich was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field with three triples. Brooks paced the Seahawks with 14 points while Martin added 11 and seven rebounds.
It was all John Carroll in the second half as Starks' three-pointer to start the second half sealed the lead for the Blue Streak for good. JCU went on to build its lead to 13 on three separate occasions, the last time being at 4:55 (91-78). Eight points from Brooks helped close the gap to 94-88 with under a minute left.
Starks finished the day with 26 points while Vuyanich contributed 19 off the bench. Senior guard Danny Wallack (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Linane each tallied 12 points in keeping the Blue Streak undefeated on the young season.
St. Mary's will travel to Greensboro, N.C. for the Guilford College Classic on November 20-21. The Seahawks will take on the hosts on Friday at 7:00 p.m. before facing Greensboro College the next day at 4:00 p.m.
