Box Score Greensboro, N.C. – Friday night's men's basketball game between St. Mary's College of Maryland and Guilford College came down to the wire as senior Will Freeman's (Rockingham, N.C./Richmond Senior) jumper fell with two seconds remaining in overtime, giving Guilford the 69-68 triumph over St. Mary's.
Guilford (2-0) opened up the extra period with five straight points to stake a 66-61 lead on a Freeman layup with 2:26 remaining. Twenty seconds later, first-year guard Reggie Rouse (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) pulled the Seahawks (1-2) within three and then senior captain Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) made the front end of two shots for just a two-point deficit at 1:31.
Sophomore forward Isaiah Martin (Brandywine, Md./Gwynn Park) stepped up to the line at 1:20 and knocked down a pair of free throws to knot the game for the fourth time at 66-66. A quick Seahawk foul put sophomore guard Jarrod Rogers (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) on the line and Rogers only made one, leaving the door open for St. Mary's.
Brooks was fouled and he connected on both free throws to have his team go up one with 20 seconds left on the clock. Freeman finished off the dish from junior guard Zachary Houston (Hickory, N.C./St. Stephen's) for the game-winning basket.
Brooks finished as the Seahawks' leading scorer with 16 points and added seven rebounds while Martin recorded a near double-double with a dozen points and nine boards. Senior guard Donya Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College) contributed 10 points, three caroms, and three assists.
The Quakers took a 36-27 advantage into the locker room at halftime as junior forward Trever Hyatt (Connelly Springs, N.C./East Burke) connected on a three-pointer with 37 seconds left in the first half. Guilford notched 14 points off of 13 Seahawk miscues in the first 20 minutes. Freeman led all scorers during intermission with eight points while sophomore guard Delaszo Smith (Baltimore, Md./Annapolis) had seven off the bench for St. Mary's.
St. Mary's outscored the Quakers, 34-25, in the second stanza as the Seahawks erased a 10-point deficit over the final 9:51 of regulation with a 21-11 run. An old-fashioned three-point play by Martin put St. Mary's up 60-58 at 1:59 before Guilford regained a one-point lead at 1:07. Brooks made the first of two free throws with under a minute left to even the game at 61-61. The two teams went a combined 0-for-3 from the field to send the game into overtime.
The Seahawks will look to snap their two-game skid tomorrow, Saturday, November 21 when St. Mary's takes on Greensboro College on the final day of the Guilford Classic at 4:00 p.m.
