St. Mary's City, Md. – It was a dominant day for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team Sunday afternoon as the Seahawks blanked the visiting Trinity (D.C.) University Tigers (2-5). Today's 9-0 win marked the sixth shutout victory of the season as well as the fifth in the last six matches.
St. Mary's (9-2) dropped only one game in three doubles matches as seniors Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) swept their opponents at No. 1 doubles for their third straight doubles match win, improving to 9-4 on the season.
Junior Mollie Johnson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and first-year Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) cruised to their sixth consecutive doubles win at No. 2 doubles, moving to 6-3 overall. At No. 3 doubles, first-year Chelsea English (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and senior captain Lauren Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) notched their third doubles win in a row with an 8-1 victory.
In singles play, the Seahawks lost only seven games in winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
First-year Katie Chase (Parkton, Md./Hereford) tallied her third win of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Gwynne Arias. Junior Liza Moore (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles as Moore played in her first match of the season.
Junior Kayla Baier (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep) improved to 3-1 on the season with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles for her second straight singles win. First-year Cristal Garcia-Lara (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) also nabbed her first win in her first match as Garcia-Lara posted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 6 singles.
St. Mary's will be back on the courts on Tuesday, March 31st when the Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to take on The Catholic University of America in a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m.
