Newport News, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team dropped their second straight match Wednesday afternoon as the Seahawks suffered a 9-0 setback at the hands of Christopher Newport University, who is ranked seventh in the Atlantic South region.
Today's loss was the first Capital Athletic Conference loss for St. Mary's (9-4, 4-1 CAC) while the Captains (12-4, 5-0 CAC) remained undefeated in conference play.
Senior captain Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) claimed three games from first-year McKinney Harwood (Omaha, Neb./Westside), who is ranked 14th in the region, before falling 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
First-year Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) saw her 10-match win streak come to an end with a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 8-10 loss to first-year Alexandra Drye (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) at No. 2 singles. This is Barall's first dual match setback as she falls to 14-2 on the season with a 12-1 dual match record.
St. Mary's will be back on the courts on this Saturday, April 11th when the Seahawks welcomes Salisbury University, who is ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region, to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a conference match at 11:00 a.m. on Senior Day.
Before the match begins on Saturday, Ramsey, fellow captain Lauren Rost (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville), and Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) will be honored for their years of dedication to the Seahawk women's tennis program.
