Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team wrapped up their 2015 campaign Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference Championship Tournament. The fourth-seeded Seahawks suffered a 9-0 setback at the hands of No. 20 University of Mary Washington.
St. Mary's finished off Head Coach Greg Shedd's second year at the helm with a 10-7 (4-3 CAC) overall record. This year's 10 wins is the first double-digit win season during Shedd's short tenure. Top-seeded University of Mary Washington (15-7), who is ranked sixth in the Atlantic South region, will now face No. 2 seed Christopher Newport University on Sunday, April 26th in the title match.
The Seahawks played tough and competitive against the 11-time defending CAC champions, being shut out in only five of 15 sets played in the match.
Senior Shannon Ramsey (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and first-year Melissa Barall (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) each claimed three games from their regionally-ranked opponents at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Barall finished her rookie season with a team-best 17 singles wins as she posted a 17-3 overall record for the 2014-15 season. Between February 15th and April 3rd, Barall won 10 straight singles matches. She tallied a 13-2 mark at No. 2 singles.
Senior Emily Stumpfig (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) completed her four-year career with a 48-30 singles record, including a 10-6 mark as a senior. Stumpfig left her name in the record books as she set the school's single-season record for singles wins at 18 in 2012.
Ramsey and Stumpfig teamed up for a team-best 10 doubles wins as the duo notched a 10-8 overall record, including a 10-6 mark at No. 1 doubles.
Stumpfig leaves St. Mary's as the all-time leader in doubles wins with a 42-32 career record.
