Delaware Valley Edges Seahawk Field Hockey in OT

Box Score

Doylestown, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team suffered a second straight overtime loss Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 in OT to host Delaware Valley University.

St. Mary's (2-2) dominated the first half as the Seahawks posted a 7-1 margin in shots while penalty corners were even at two apiece. However, DVU's senior keeper Emily Aldridge (Hammonton, N.J./Oakcrest) was up to the challenge, turning away five scoring opportunities.

Following a scoreless first stanza, Delaware Valley (3-1) broke up the draw with a score at 44:05. Senior forward Taylor Prichett (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) fired a shot which hit the post and laid on the goal line for junior Stefania Swider (Great Meadows, N.J./Hackettstown) to knock in for the 1-0 Aggie lead.

Junior forward Brady Wolf (Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh) responded for the Seahawks with her third goal of the season at 51:30. Senior captain Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) sent in a cross from the right side and then a scramble ensued before Wolf tapped it in to knot the contest up at 1-1. Shots were equal in the second half at five each but neither side could capture the win in regulation.

In the extra period, St. Mary's had a chance to end the game just 41 seconds into overtime as senior captain Emily Bishop (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) put a shot past Aldridge but first-year defender Aimee MacFarland (Telford, Pa./Souderton) came up for the Aggies with a defensive save to keep the game going.

The Seahawks were awarded a corner the resulting shot went wide. DVU garnered a corner at 75:30 and generated two shots in a 13-second span. The first shot was saved by St. Mary's sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) while the second one went wide.

After assisting on the team's first goal of the game, Prichett got to a loose ball, went around a defender, and blasted it for the game-winning goal at 77:48.

St. Mary's finished the contest with a 14-9 advantage in shots as well as an 11-6 margin in corners. Thompson picked up three saves while Aldridge finished with seven stops in the Aggies' third win of the season.

The Seahawks will look to put an end to their two-game skid when St. Mary's welcomes Randolph-Macon College (3-2) to Seahawk Stadium for its home-opener on Tuesday, September 15 at 4:00 p.m.
