Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team battled against DePauw University Sunday morning on the final day of the University of Mary Washington Tournament. DePauw handed the Seahawks their first loss of the season with a 4-3 double overtime victory.
St. Mary's (2-1) force overtime with 20 seconds left in regulation as sophomore midfielder Sophie Michel (Westminster, Md./Westminster) tallied her second of the day off a feed from senior captain Emily Bishop (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron).
DePauw, who received votes in the NFHCA Division III Preseason Poll, came out firing in the first extra period as the Tigers outshot the Seahawks, 6-2, and collected one penalty corner. St. Mary's sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Thompson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) was up to the challenge as Thompson turned away three attempts in keeping her team alive and making it necessary for a second overtime stanza.
It was all DePauw (1-1) in the second extra period as the Tigers posted margins of 5-0 in shots and 3-0 in corners. Thompson added two more saves before DePauw broke the 3-3 draw at 90:23 behind sophomore forward Tori Witteman's (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) first tally of the season as she finished off a pass from sophomore Maddy Burds (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier).
DePauw edged the Seahawks, 18-17, in shots for the game while owning a 12-9 margin in corners. Thompson finished the day with a season-best nine saves as St. Mary's two-game win streak was snapped. Sophomore Sarah Guendert (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy) recorded 10 stops for the Tigers' first win of the season.
The Seahawks staked a 1-0 lead at 13:17 behind Michel's first career goal as sophomore Nicole Lertora (Olney, Md./Blake) assisted on the play. DePauw evened up the score at eight minutes later with an unassisted tally from sophomore forward Reilly Bruce (Chicago, Ill./Francis Parker).
First-year midfielder Mollie Belson (Columbia, Md./Atholton) took a feed from senior captain Nina Collins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and found the back of the cage for her first career goal at 29:34, sending St. Mary's into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
DePauw came out in the second half with a strong response in scoring two goals in less than three minutes to claim its first lead of the contest, 3-2, at 58:03. Junior forward Addie Ball (Winnetka, Ill./North Shore Country Day) and Burds scored in the Tigers' 2-0 run.
St. Mary's looks to return to the win column on Saturday, September 12 as the Seahawks' road trip continues at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
