Box Score Oberlin, Ohio – Senior midfielder Matt Carney (Alexandria, Va./The Potomac School) lifted the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to their first win of the season with his game-winning goal in overtime. St. Mary's (1-1) picked up the 11-10 extra period win Sunday afternoon over the host Oberlin College Yeomen (1-1).
Oberlin won the first face-off in the extra period and then gained a 30-second extra-man opportunity at 3:42. The Yeomen called a timeout two seconds later before junior defender Jackson Patrican (Boxford, Mass./Pingree) caused Oberlin's 29th turnover at 3:04. Carney then got the ball in transition and ripped the game-winner just 1:07 into overtime.
Senior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) had a day for the Seahawks with six points on two goals and four assists while fellow captains Austin Toland (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's) and Brendan Steele (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) each tallied two goals and an assist.
The Yeomen claimed a 2-1 lead after one period of play, scoring both in the final 2:30 of the quarter. St. Mary's regained the advantage with two goals in the second while the defense kept Oberlin off the scoreboard for a 3-2 Seahawk upper hand in halftime.
Senior attackman Nick Lobley (Port Washington, N.Y./Portledge School) paced the Yeomen in the game with four goals while fellow classmate Alex Wagman (Lutherville, Md./Deerfield Academy) contributed a hat trick.
Oberlin regrouped and outscored the Seahawks, 5-3, in the third stanza for a 7-6 lead after 45 minutes. Lobley picked up three of his goals in the third while Steele found the back of the net twice, including one in the final minute. Behind Toland's man-up goal with 19 seconds left in the game, St. Mary's owned a 10-9 advantage.
The Yeomen won the ensuing face-off and Wagman netted the game-tying goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Reese Koburov (Woodbridge, Ill./Benet Academy) with four ticks on the clock. Oberlin won the final face-off of regulation but did not generate any offense before the time expired.
St. Mary's posted a 39-34 margin in shots while the Yeomen collected a 34-30 edge in ground balls behind seven ground ball pickups by junior midfielder Kinori Rosnow (Kirkland, Wash./Overlake). Oberlin dominated the face-offs as Rosnow won 18-of-25, including all eight in the fourth period.
The Seahawks were a perfect 4-for-4 on extra-man opportunities with Toland recording a pair of man-up goals. Defensively, Patrican and junior defenseman Mike Freiji (Westminster, Md./Loyola Blakefield) forced the Yeomen into 29 miscues with five caused turnovers each.
Junior goalie Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) tallied 11 saves and three ground balls in the win while senior Miles Brooke (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) also had 11 stops in Oberlin's first loss of the season.
St. Mary's will look to keep the momentum going when the Seahawks travel to Chestertown, Md., for a non-conference matchup at Washington College (0-1) at 4:00 p.m.
