Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Attackmen Nick Wilkinson (Huntingtown, Md./Calverton) and Steve Jones (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) combined for 17 points in helping the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team snap their three-game skid Wednesday afternoon. The Seahawks picked up a 24-14 non-conference victory over Illinois Wesleyan University.
Career days by Wilkinson and Jones powered St. Mary's to the win. Wilkinson finished the afternoon with career-highs of four goals and six assists for a career-best 10 points while Jones put up a double hat trick in recording a career-high six goals and seven points. Senior captain Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville) was not far behind Wilkinson and Jones with six points on two goals and four assists.
The Seahawks (2-4) used a pair of eight-goal quarters to surge past Illinois Wesleyan (4-2), who saw its four-game win streak halted. St. Mary's outscored the Titans, 8-4, in both the first and third quarters while winning 23-of-42 face-off matchups. Senior midfielder Teddy Secor (California, Md./Calverton) went 13-of-24 at the X with three ground balls.
St. Mary's jumped out to a 4-0 before junior attackman Evan Mok-Lamme (Grand Junction, Colo./Westtown School [Pa.]) put the Titans on the scoreboard. The two sides alternated scores for the rest of the first quarter as the Seahawks claimed an 8-4 lead after one behind four from Jones.
The Seahawks opened the second period in the same way as the first to stake a 12-4 lead at 9:46. Illinois Wesleyan then outscored St. Mary's, 3-1, in closing the gap to 13-7 at halftime.
Mok-Lamme was the Titans' leading scorer with five goals while junior midfielder Michael Julius (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) contributed two goals and two assists in IWU's first loss since February 20.
The third stanza began with two goals from St. Mary's followed by two goals from the Titans before the Seahawks rattled off five straight, including a pair from Jordan, for a 20-9 advantage at 2:28. It was 2-1 in favor of IWU in the final two minutes of the quarter. In the fourth, each side scored three with Mok-Lamme notching two for the Titans.
Jordan and senior midfielder Caleb Jardeleza (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) each picked up a career-best six ground balls for St. Mary's; however, Illinois Wesleyan posted a 46-44 advantage for the game. The Seahawks outshot IWU, 54-48. Senior defenseman Phil Cappello (Woburn, Mass./Austin Prep) led the defense with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Junior goalie Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) registered 14 saves in the Seahawk win while junior Steven Laduzinsky (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) made 12 stops for the Titans.
The Seahawks return to Capital Athletic Conference play this Saturday, March 19, traveling to Buena Vista, Virginia to take on Southern Virginia University at 2:00 p.m.
