Seahawk Men's Lacrosse Outlasted by Kenyon

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team saw a five-goal lead disappear as the Seahawks (1-3) dropped their second straight Wednesday afternoon. St. Mary's succumbed to a 16-13 loss at the hands of Kenyon College (3-0).

Senior captain Austin Toland (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's School) paced the Seahawks with a career-best four goals while midfielders Luke Eshleman (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and J.G. Hahn (Ellicott City, Md./Loyola Blakefield) also posted career days. Eshleman came up with two goals and an assist while Hahn added two goals.

Kenyon staked an early 2-1 lead at 11:49 with consecutive goals before St. Mary's unleashed five straight to reclaim a 6-2 advantage after one quarter of play. Hahn scored both of his career-best two goals in the 5-0 run.

Eshleman's second goal of the day stretched St. Mary's run to six in a row at the start of the second period. Sophomore midfielder Pierce Kraft (Rydal, Pa./William Penn Charter) notched back-to-back goals to help the Lords close the gap to 7-4 at 7:09. The Seahawks would outscore Kenyon, 2-1, in the final 5:28 of the half for a 9-5 advantage.

Sophomore attackman Joseph Galardi (San Francisco, Calif./University) exploded for six goals and an assist in leading the Lords to their third straight win. Junior attackman Robert Jacobs (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Benjamin) added three goals and one helper while Kraft (2g, 1a) and sophomore midfielder Chris Ferraro (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) (1g, 2a) each tallied three points.

Kenyon lit up the scoreboard in the third stanza, outscoring the Seahawks 9-3 in the frame. The Lords scored twice in a 1:35-minute span to begin the second half. St. Mary's picked up two scores in a 2:05-minute span, with a Lord goal sandwiched in between, to stay ahead with an 11-8 lead at 6:50. Kenyon then rattled off five in a row to overtake the lead, 13-11, at 2:22. Each side scored one more time inside of the final two minutes to keep it a two-goal game heading into the final period.

The Lords outdueled St. Mary's, 2-1 in the fourth quarter to post the 16-13 win.

St. Mary's had its best performance at the X, winning 21-of-32 face-offs as senior midfielder Teddy Secor (California, Md./Calverton) went 16-of-23 with a game- and career-best nine ground balls. The Seahawks also won the ground ball battle, 36-25, thanks in part to Secor's efforts. St. Mary's also edged the Lords in shots, 44-41.

Junior goalie Max Alderman (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) registered 12 saves for St. Mary's while senior Patrick Shevelson (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) had 17 saves and two ground balls in the Kenyon win.

The Seahawks will open up Capital Athletic Conference play this Saturday, March 12 when St. Mary's travels to the Eastern Shore to face No. 2 Salisbury University. First face-off is at 1:00 p.m.
