Athletic Accomplishments:
Donald (Donny) was one of the best defensive playersand a tremendous leaper, although only 5’8”. Donnyplayed with Tubby Smith while at Great Mills High School. Afour-year starter for the College’s basketball team, he was aleading scorer with a career total of 1079 points in 69 games. Hewas one of the first four basketball players to be inducted intothe School’s 1000-Point Club started in 1976. While astandout in basketball, he also was a leading baseball hitter andplayed on the lacrosse club team. As a first-year, he was honorablemention All-Potomac Intercollegiate Conference (PIC) and All-Statefor basketball. His sophomore year, he made second team All-PIC,led the basketball team to the National Association ofIntercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 19 semi-finals and wasselected St. Mary’s College Male Athlete of the Year. In hisjunior year, he again made second team All-PIC, led the team backto the NAIA District 19 semi-finals and repeated as theCollege’s Male Athlete of the Year. His basketball jersey #22was retired after he graduated.
Post-collegiateAccomplishments:
Donny served as Chopticon High School’s headbasketball coach for two years and assistant football coachfor one year while also serving as St. Mary’s assistantlacrosse coach. In 1975, he became the College’s headbasketball coach and admissions counselor. The following year, hejoined the Dean of Students’ staff in the area of minorityrecruitment and counseling. He coached at St. Mary’s for sixyears and compiled a 64-86 record.
