Athletic Accomplishments:
Joyce has been involved in athletics throughout herlife. While at St. Mary’s, she earned awards in the onlyvarsity sports offered at the time, basketball and field hockey.She also excelled in intramural tennis, baseball and volleyball andwas named athletic association president for the 1962-63 schoolyear. As president, she helped organize and schedule athleticevents with other schools. Her first year at St. Mary’s, shewas captain of the field hockey team and manager for thewomen’s basketball team. Her second year, in addition tobeing athletic association president, she was captain of thevolleyball team. She played on all-star teams for volleyball,basketball and field hockey. She received the Athletic AssociationAward, the school’s highest athletic honor, for her serviceand dedication to her sports and the College’s athleticprogram.
Coaching Accomplishments:
Joyce was a physical education high school teacher for 28 yearsuntil her retirement in 2000. In 1979, she started thewomen’s soccer program at Severna Park High School in SevernaPark, Maryland and coached the team for 21 years, compiling arecord of over 400 wins. Her teams won four state championships andshe held the national high school record for most consecutive wins(46) and most consecutive games without a loss (57).
